What Does pH Actually Measure

pH measures the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution. An ion is an atom or molecule that has gained or lost electrons, giving it a positive or negative charge. The pH scale assigns a number from 0 to 14 based on that charge.

Pure water sits right in the middle at 7.0, which is neutral. Anything below 7 is acidic. Anything above 7 is alkaline, also called basic. A pH of 0 is the strongest acid possible, and a pH of 14 is the strongest alkaline.

Who Created the pH Scale

Danish chemist S.P.L. Sorensen developed the pH scale in 1909, and it's still the standard used in labs today. His formula turned something invisible, the strength of an acid or alkaline, into a simple number anyone can read and compare. That's why an accurate pH measurement is still the starting point for most scientific research and testing.

Why Is the pH Scale Logarithmic

Here's the part that trips people up. The pH scale isn't a straight line, it's logarithmic. That means each whole number is 10 times stronger than the one next to it.

A solution with a pH of 4 is 10 times more acidic than a pH of 5, and 100 times more acidic than a pH of 6. The same math works going up the alkaline side. A pH of 10 is 10 times more alkaline than a pH of 9, and 100 times more alkaline than a pH of 8.

So a small change in the number represents a big change in strength.
